The Section 8 Program allows families to live in houses and apartments that are privately owned. Rents are based on comparable units in the county, with amenities and utilities taken into account. This is accomplished through a contract between the Authority and the owner which subsidizes the rent that the Section 8 tenant pays.
Families, elderly, disabled/handicapped people and single people may be eligible for housing.
The Section 8 Program also has a portability component. A Section 8 Voucher issued by the Authority may be used anywhere in the United States, including Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
Families under the Section 8 Program are also eligible to participate in the Family Self-Sufficiency Program.
